Man’s 50-Year Arm-Raising Journey for Spirituality and Peace
Amar Bharati, now in his seventies, has kept his right arm raised for five decades, a remarkable act of devotion and sacrifice.
In 1973, Bharati, then a bank employee with a wife and three children, felt a calling for a deeper purpose beyond his ordinary life.

Seeking spiritual enlightenment, he abandoned his family and job to embrace the life of an Indian Sadhu, practicing extreme self-denial.
Bharati dedicated his existence to Shiva, a principal Hindu deity revered for destruction and recreation, as per the BBC.
Hinduism views the universe as cyclical, regenerating every 2.16 billion years, with Shiva destroying it to enable new creation, according to the World History Encyclopaedia.
As a Sadhu, Bharati roamed India’s roads in orange robes, carrying only a trishula, Shiva’s three-pronged spear symbolizing creation, protection, and destruction.
His raised arm honors Shiva but also serves as a protest against war, advocating for global peace, as he told the Greek Reporter.

In an interview with History of Yesterday, Bharati questioned, “Why do we fight among ourselves? I want the world to live in peace.”
The physical toll is immense: after two years of pain, his arm lost sensation, muscles atrophied, and blood flow ceased, leaving it half the size of his left arm.
His arm’s cartilage is so fragile that lowering it could cause it to snap, and his curled fingers and spiraling nails reflect permanent damage.
Bharati’s unwavering commitment to Shiva and peace continues to inspire, with his story captivating audiences worldwide on social media.
