A heartbroken widow is sharing her tragic story to raise awareness after her husband, Michael Reynolds, died from a rare condition misdiagnosed as tonsillitis. The 29-year-old new father visited his general practitioner (GP) in November 2023, complaining of a persistent sore throat and cough that had lasted for months.
Michael, a truck driver from Boston, England, had recently welcomed his son Jacob into the world. During his GP visit, he was prescribed a steroid nasal spray and sent home. However, his condition rapidly worsened, leaving him unable to swallow by the next day.

Returning to the doctor, Michael described severe symptoms, including difficulty eating and a sensation of his throat closing up. He was spitting into a bowl, unable to swallow saliva, and even asked if he needed to visit the A&E (the UK equivalent of the ER).
Despite his concerns, the second doctor diagnosed him with tonsillitis and prescribed oral antibiotics. Michael picked up the medication from a pharmacy but collapsed at home shortly after, suffering a seizure in front of his wife, Charlotte, and their infant son.
Rushed to the hospital, Michael tragically passed away the following morning. An inquest held in December 2023 revealed a “missed opportunity” to send him for urgent hospital treatment, which could have saved his life.
A post-mortem examination determined that Michael suffered a hypoxic cardiac arrest caused by a lack of oxygen due to his throat closing. The coroner identified the cause of death as epiglottitis, a rare condition involving swelling of the flap covering the windpipe.

Charlotte, now 31, is devastated by the loss of her husband. “Watching Jacob grow up without his daddy is heartbreaking,” she said. “Michael meant everything to us, and losing him has left a huge hole in our lives.”
The inquest provided Charlotte with answers about her husband’s death, though reliving the events was painful. She hopes to one day explain the tragedy to Jacob when he’s old enough to understand.
Charlotte is now determined to raise awareness about epiglottitis, a condition she had never heard of before. She urges others to recognize its signs, including difficulty swallowing and breathing, which require immediate medical attention.

By sharing her story, Charlotte aims to improve medical care and prevent others from enduring the same loss. “I wouldn’t want anyone going through what we have,” she said, emphasizing the need for better awareness and emergency response.
The tragedy has left Charlotte a single mother, raising Jacob while grieving the loss of her beloved husband. Her mission is to ensure Michael’s death leads to change, saving others from similar heartbreak.
