Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton Passes Away at 46: Tributes Pour In

Former world champion Ricky Hatton, fondly known as ‘the Hitman,’ has passed away at 46. His body was found at his Manchester home on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the boxing community.

Greater Manchester Police were called to Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am. They confirmed the death of a 46-year-old man, noting no suspicious circumstances are currently suspected.

Hatton, a celebrated light-welterweight and welterweight champion, won 45 of his 48 professional bouts. His illustrious 15-year career, which ended in 2012, made him a British boxing legend.

Renowned for his ferocious style, Hatton secured world titles against Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo. His fights attracted huge crowds, with 30,000 fans traveling to Las Vegas for his 2007 clash with Floyd Mayweather.

Despite defeats to Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Hatton’s devoted fanbase never wavered. His final professional fight in Manchester in 2012 rang with chants of “there’s only one Ricky Hatton.”

Hatton’s brother, former boxer Matthew, posted a moving tribute on X: “I love you Richard. See you on the other side.” The boxing world joined in mourning his loss.

David Beckham called the news “heartbreaking” on Instagram, while Tyson Fury wrote, “There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this—so young.”

A passionate Manchester City supporter, Hatton was honored with a minute’s appreciation before City’s match against Manchester United. Fans filled Etihad Stadium with applause and songs.

City manager Pep Guardiola hailed Hatton as a “true champion” and part of the club’s family. Forward Phil Foden dedicated his goal in the 3-0 victory to the boxing star.

Wayne Rooney, who once carried Hatton’s belts into the ring, described him as a “legend, warrior, and great person.” Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher said knowing him was an “honour.”

Amir Khan mourned Hatton as a mentor and friend, while Chris Eubank Jr saluted his legacy. The World Boxing Association praised Hatton’s indomitable spirit.

Promoter Frank Warren lauded Hatton’s talent and impact, highlighting his 2005 victory over Tszyu. “Ricky inspired a generation,” Warren shared on X.

Hatton had planned a professional comeback against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai on December 2. He previously fought an exhibition against Marco Antonio Barrera in 2022.

In a 2023 documentary, Hatton candidly shared his struggles with depression and mental health. His legacy as a fighter and a person will endure in boxing history.
