Greta Thunberg Claims Harsh Treatment in Israeli Custody During Gaza Aid Mission

Greta Thunberg, the renowned Swedish climate activist, has accused Israeli authorities of subjecting her to mistreatment while in custody. She was detained while participating in a flotilla aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Thunberg contacted Swedish officials, claiming she endured harsh conditions and inadequate treatment during her detention.

The 22-year-old was apprehended after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of over 40 vessels attempting to break Israel’s 16-year naval blockade of Gaza. Thunberg, along with 436 other activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers, was taken to Ketziot, a high-security prison in the Negev desert, also known as Ansar III.

An email from the Swedish foreign ministry, shared with Thunberg’s family and reported by The Guardian, detailed her ordeal. An official who visited her described a cell plagued by bedbugs, with limited food and water, causing dehydration and rashes on her skin.

Thunberg claimed she was forced to pose for photographs while holding unidentified flags. She expressed concern that images of her and another detainee may have been publicized, a fear corroborated by others from the flotilla who were released on October 4.

Italian journalist Lorenzo D’Agostino, a fellow flotilla member, alleged that Thunberg was “wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy.” These accusations have been vehemently denied by the Israeli embassy, which dismissed them as “complete lies.”

The embassy stated that all detainees, including those from the flotilla, were provided with food, water, toilets, legal counsel, and medical care, with their rights fully respected. Despite these assurances, Thunberg’s allegations have drawn significant international attention.

This is not Thunberg’s first detention related to Gaza aid efforts. Earlier this year, she was arrested and deported after a similar attempt to deliver supplies. During her recent detention, she was asked to sign a document but refused, uncertain of its meaning.

The Global Sumud Flotilla sought to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, challenging Israel’s long-standing blockade. The interception of the flotilla and the detention of its members have reignited debates about the treatment of activists in the region.

Swedish officials confirmed that Thunberg had access to legal counsel during her detention. She is expected to be among over 70 individuals from various nationalities leaving Israel on October 6, following their release.

The conditions at Ketziot prison, typically used for Palestinian security prisoners, have come under scrutiny. Reports of solitary confinement and harsh treatment have fueled criticism from activists and human rights advocates.

Thunberg’s detention highlights her dedication to global causes beyond climate activism. Her actions, alongside the flotilla’s mission, underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding humanitarian efforts in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
