Matrix Co-director Creates New Sci-Fi Movie Featuring an All-Trans-Women Cast

A groundbreaking sci-fi thriller, Dolls, has arrived, with Matrix co-director Lilly Wachowski serving as its executive producer.

This short film marks the directorial debut of filmmaker and model Geena Rocero, who also stars alongside Yên Sen, Arewà Basit, Macy Rodman, and Vas Eli.

The story reimagines The Stepford Wives through a trans perspective, centering on Yan, a private investigator tasked with infiltrating a secretive dating workshop for trans women.

The workshop’s leader, Gene, claims to help women navigate relationship challenges, but rumors swirl that she’s running a cult with darker intentions.

Wachowski described Dolls as “a fever dream reflecting on assimilation and the investigation of trans identity,” expressing pride in supporting Rocero’s bold vision.

Rocero shared that the film channels her “internal chatter,” inspired by visionary directors like Claire Denis, Lucrecia Martel, and Park Chan-wook.

The score, composed by Pulitzer Prize–winner Susie Ibarra, weaves visuals, sound, and music into a striking interplay, amplifying the film’s unapologetic narrative.

The title Dolls draws from trans community slang, where “doll” is a term of endearment, now popularized with celebrities wearing “Protect the Dolls” T-shirts.

While no release date is confirmed, the involvement of high-profile names like Wachowski and Ibarra has sparked significant buzz.

Dolls promises to be a visually and emotionally compelling exploration of trans identity, challenging mainstream narratives with its unique lens.

With its all-trans-women cast and crew, the film stands as a powerful milestone in inclusive storytelling, poised to leave a lasting impact.
