A British teenager, Marcus Fakana, who was freed from a Dubai prison earlier this year, has tragically lost his life in a car accident in Tottenham. The 19-year-old had been jailed in Dubai for engaging in a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while on holiday.
Fakana’s troubles began when the girl’s parents reported the relationship to authorities after returning to London. In the UAE, the legal age of consent differs from the UK, where both teens, aged 17 and 18, would have been considered of consenting age.
The UAE’s strict laws led to Fakana’s arrest and a one-year prison sentence for having a sexual relationship with a minor, despite the consensual nature of the encounter. The UK government’s travel advice for the UAE highlights that such relationships are prosecutable if one party is under 18.
After months of campaigning by the organization Detained in Dubai, Fakana was released from prison on July 3 and returned to the UK. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was involved in a fatal car crash just three months later.

According to reports from The Standard, the accident occurred on October 3 in Tottenham when the car Fakana was a passenger in collided with another vehicle. The car had reportedly failed to stop for police, who briefly lost sight of it during a pursuit.
When officers located the vehicle on The Roundway, N17, it had crashed, and Fakana was rushed to a hospital. Despite efforts from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance, he succumbed to his injuries.
Detained in Dubai’s CEO, Radha Stirling, confirmed Fakana’s death in a heartfelt statement, expressing devastation at the loss. She described Fakana as a friend and client, noting the tragedy of his death so soon after his release.
Stirling emphasized the toll of Fakana’s imprisonment, calling it an unjust ordeal that robbed him of precious time. She remarked, “His loss is a painful reminder of how precious life is and how unnecessary imprisonment robs people of time they can never regain.”

The driver of the car, 19-year-old Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, was arrested at the scene and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a license, and failing to stop. He is set to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed Fakana as the victim, stating that his next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. They have requested privacy during this difficult time.
The incident has been referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for further investigation, as the tragedy underscores the fragility of life and the lasting impact of Fakana’s ordeal in Dubai.
